6-Week Raku Pottery Class
Location: The Potter’s Shop
Time: Mondays, 6:30–8:30 PM
Dates: June 30 – August 4

Prerequisite:
Prior wheel-throwing experience is required. Students must have completed either a beginner wheel class or equivalent studio hours. Must be 18 years of age or older to participate.

Outline of Class:

  • Refine wheel-throwing skills with a focus on traditional Raku forms
  • Work with raku clay bodies containing grog and fire clay
  • Learn to prepare and apply terra sigillata
  • Experiment with horsehair and non-reduction firings
  • Complete multiple Raku glaze firings using a gas kiln in an oxygen-reduced atmosphere

Class Schedule:

  • Weeks 1 & 2: Wheel throwing – Introduction to traditional Raku forms
  • Week 3: Terra sigillata application, Raku tong handling, and historical overview
  • Week 4: Glazing
  • Week 5: Horsehair and non-reduction firings, Naked raku “glaze” will be applied
  • Week 6: Final Raku glaze firing with reduction

Note: Firing days may run longer than class time. Duration depends on kiln capacity, weather, and outdoor temperature. Firing may be postponed due to unsafe weather conditions.

What’s Included:

  • One 25lb bag of Raku clay
  • Access to classroom tools, wheels, and materials
  • Use of Studio Raku glazes

Important Notes:

  • Raku pieces are not food-safe.
  • Respirators are required for all firing participants.
  • Students must wear long sleeves, closed-toed shoes, and avoid baggy clothing. Long hair must be tied back securely.
  • Students will be working with open flames, extreme heat, and potentially toxic fumes. Safety protocols must be followed at all times.

Cancellation Policy:

Cancellations and session changes are permitted up to 14 days prior to the start of the session.  Due to the limited number of spaces available in each class, students who must cancel from 14 to 7 days prior to the start of the session will be refunded 50% of the class fee. No refunds are permitted on cancellations less than 7 days prior to the start of the session. We reserve the right to cancel or merge any of our classes based on enrollment. All students that may be affected by these changes will be notified, and those students will have the right to cancel their registration for a full refund or receive a credit for the next class session.  FULL REFUNDS ARE SUBJECTIVE TO A 5% SERVICE FEE.
